21st Century Workforce
Career/Life Planning—from middle school, high school, college, career—
Creating a workforce for the 21st Century
People need to dream, then plan so dreams are reality. Students are people who go to school to help attain their dreams and goals. But, currently, the focus is on the institutions of education—middle school, high school, college.
The educational organization is the means to the end as the individuals move along the planned pathway, which constantly evolves as the individuals learn. Each educational institution is part of the pathway.
Outstanding tools exist to help people with this planning—the national Freshman Transition Initiative headed up by Dr. Rebecca Dedmond and My Ten Year Plan and other materials created by publisher Mindy Bingham. Both of these standards-based efforts focus on middle school and high school. The college piece of the career pathway is being developed with college leadership, such as that of Santa Barbara City College. Other colleges are welcomed to be a part of creating the college linkage to student career planning.
Dr. Victoria Bortolussi, founder of LINC (Learning in Communities), a dean of over 30 years, is joining forces with these efforts and those of Dr. W. Norton Grubb and others to create the college component. |
