Making a difference has been a reoccurring theme to Dr. Bortolussi’s work. Her work embraces moving the educational process to learning rather than teaching by focusing on the partnership between learner and teacher. Thus the student becomes the center for all that is learned and should be more responsible for learning by actually embracing that role for the student. Much of this passion is embodied in the work of learning communities which she brought to Moorpark College where she served as dean for 18 years. The heart of Learning in Communities, which is now the name of her collaborative consulting firm, was actually prompted by Dr. Bortolussi’s son who transferred to the Evergreen State College in Washington state which is composed entirely of learning communities and gives evaluative transcripts for grades. Her son, the student, discovered this educational methodology for himself; it was as a parent that Dr. Bortolussi then found the methodology so revolutionary that she
brought several educators from the college and high school levels to experience this different type of learning and thus bring it back to their respective schools. |
